New blog post: "Hostility and Abuse Threaten to Undermine Gains in Representative Democracy"
In a new blog post on the Brennan Center’s website, Maya Kornberg and I dive into more data from nationwide surveys of local elected officials and state legislators regarding the intimidation and abuse that they face on the campaign trail and in office. This work expands on arguments and evidence from a recent, larger report we were part of, “Intimidation of State and Local Officeholders: The Threat to Democracy.” In particular, we discuss how lower-income people, women of color, and young people in state and local government appear more vulnerable to intimidation and abuse, and highlight the threats these disparities pose to fair representation — both descriptive and substantive.
